It’s fall again and that means the near start of a new basketball season. The MVC Vikings men’s team have been preparing for the demanding task that lies ahead.
The revamped roster has six returners, only two of which started the whole year last season: sophomore guard Jim Thomas and now senior forward B.J Corley. The other returners are forwards Josh Weir, Dave Yadrich, Daniel Cardoza and Matt Baker.
Weir said, ”I think even though we have many new faces, we have what it takes to be successful this season. The guys are picking up stuff pretty well and the seniors are leading by example.”
Coach Chad Lance said he was pleased with his returners and talked about how good a job they were doing at leading the newcomers thus far.
Lance said, ”Every year, it’s good to have carry-over from one team to the next. I believe that linkage is always good. This year we have some guys that have been doing a great job as leaders. Our seniors are showing the new guys what exactly it takes to be a Missouri Valley Viking.”
The team is the youngest the coach has had in a while with three dynamic freshmen. Coach Lance described freshman guard Landers Riddle as a bigger guard with a very good skill set that will be effective once developed.
He also talked about his other hard-working freshman guard Brody Thompson who has superb ball-handling skills. Rounding out the trio is 6’5’’ forward Colin Burns from Stoutland, Mo.
The rest of a roster is anchored by all new players. Michael Connor, Chuck Misuraca, and Andre Richardson fill up the rest of the guard spots while Lawrence Brown, James Pope, and Darryl Foster add some size to the team.
The Vikings open on the road against William Penn University on November 4 and their first home game is November 9 against the Hannibal-LaGrange College team. Check out moval.edu for information on which games will be streaming online.
