The Missouri Valley College men’s and women’s cross country teams competed in the Heart of American Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday afternoon. The race took place on the Fayette Golf course.
The women of the HAAC ran their 5k race first. Sophomore Amanda Buhr ran a season best with a time of 20 minutes and 16 seconds, and placed 13 overall.
The four remaining Lady Vikings who did not place in the top 15 used an all-out effort and as a team placed fifth The team was only seven points away from beating the fourth-placed team Benedictine. The overall team time was 1 hour and 46 minutes. Freshman Sarah Niemeier ran a time of 20 minutes and 40 seconds, and placed 20th overall. Junior Rachel Gonzales ran a career best with a time of 21 minutes and 22 seconds, and placed 27th.
The men raced second in the 8k run, running longer than the women but just as hard. Junior Matthew Leonard ran a season best of 27 minutes and 8 seconds. He placed 14 overall. Sophomore Ignacio Franco placed 16 overall and was only seven seconds away from being in the top 15. Franco ran a season best of 27 minutes and 39 seconds.
Sophomore Chase Burgess and junior Drew Mohler also ran career bests. Burgess ran a 28-minute and 31-second 8k. Mohler ran a 29-minute and 8-second 8k. The overall team time was 2 hours, 21 minutes, and 9 seconds, placing fourth overall. The men’s team beat long-time rival Benedictine by 12 points.
The men’s and women’s cross country teams will join the rest of the track team and prepare for the indoor track season. The track and field season will start in January.
