The lady wrestlers of Missouri Valley College competed in their “Missouri Valley Open” November 4-5.
For the tournament, 10 of the 14 colleges with women’s wrestling programs attended the MVC Open. According to “womenscollegewrestling.com,” a poll was taken for women’s wrestling and the lady Viking were ranked seventh out of 14 teams.
On the first day of the tournament, the lady Vikings defeated Menlo College 26- 17 and then hammered Midland College 47-0.
In the second day of the tournament, the Lady Vikings came out fired up and ready to wrestle. In eight out of 10 weight classes, the lady Vikings had wrestlers at least in the top eight final rankings as wrestlers from many teams competed at the invitational.
All of the lady Vikings wrestled very well but some stood out. Missouri Valley wrestler Jacarra Winchester placed third in her weight class. Danielle Curlis placed fourth in her weight class. Junior Jordan Hagerman placed seventh. Brittney Heatherly, senior Summer Sistad, junior Frances Efiong , and freshman Jessica Martinez-Ulloa, all placed seventh in their specific weight classes. Two lady Viking placed eighth in their weight class: Krista Camarillo and senior Paloma Basulto.
Mayleen Soto said the tournament was a preview of nationals. The women placed fourth on the second day. Frances Efiong said they plan to take nothing less than fifth place at nationals. The Viking women’s wrestling coach is Carl Murphree.
The lady Vikings took on a tough opponent on November 16 against the 2011 Women’s wrestling champs Oklahoma City. Photos of those matches, as well as the men’s wrestling matches will be featured in upcoming Delta Online posts.
