The cold wind-swept night ended with a bitter feeling. Not only did the Viking men’s soccer team lose but they lost in double overtime after leading most of the match Tuesday, Oct. 22, at Gregg Mitchell Field. MVC lost against the Baker University team 2 to 1.
Missouri Valley came into the match with a No. 6 ranking. They were playing against the Baker Wildcats who are ranked No. 16. The last match the Vikings played at home ended in a draw against the Pioneers’ of MidAmerica another conference foe ranked in the top 20.
On Tuesday night, the Vikings scored first when sophomore midfielder Raul Beneit received a pass from senior forward Nicholas Alexander in front of the goal. Beneit jumped into the air and kicked the ball past Baker’s goalie to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead.
The defense for the Vikings kept the Wildcats off the scoreboard until 1 minute and 14 seconds left in the match. Baker was awarded a penalty kick with just over a minute left on the clock and they converted the kick into the game-tying goal.
In double overtime, the Vikings gave up another goal and the match ended with the Wildcats winning 2-1.
Missouri Valley’s record now stands at 10-3-3 overall and 2-2-2 in conference play.
