The Vikings came back twice to tie the game but they ran out of time and couldn’t find the equalizer in a 3-2 loss to MidAmerica Nazarene, on Tuesday, November 12, in the semi-finals of the Heart of America Athletic Conference Tournament in Kansas.

The match started with a goal by the Pioneers in the first five minutes. The Vikings kept the Pioneers off the board the rest of the half and leveled the score at one goal apiece in the closing seconds of the first half.

Senior Nicholas Alexander received a pass from Senior Alberto Gomez and Alexander slipped past the defense and slid the ball into the corner of the net were the Pioneer goalie couldn’t get to. The goal was the last of the half and Alexander’s 14th goal of the season.

The second half started much like the first. MidAmerica scored to start the half and the Vikings had to play catch up again. The Vikings and MidAm traded shots on goal but both goaltenders stood tall. The Vikings did get the much needed equalizer in the 64th minute.

Junior defensemen Joe Wareham ran on to a ball that the Pioneers failed to clear and he struck the ball past the MidAm goalie before he could react. The goal was the first for Wareham this season.

The two teams played even through the next 15 minutes but in the 86th minute the Pioneers scored the game winning goal to beat the Vikings 3-2.

The Vikings next match will be against the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma in the first round of the NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championship Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 23, at 4 p.m. at Gregg-Mitchell Field.
