The men’s soccer team has not been beaten by Graceland University in the last seven matches the two teams have played.

Senior Alberto Gomez helped the No.16 Vikings push that streak to eight. Gomez scored two goals in the Vikings’ 4-1 victory over the Yellow Jackets  in the opening round of the Heart of America Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday November 8, at Gregg Mitchell Field.

Gomez put the Vikings on top 1-0 in the first half on a assist from midfielder Ivan Ninkov.  Both teams exchanged multiple shots on goal in the first half but neither team scored. The half ended with the Vikings holding a 1-0 lead. The second half was just underway when Gomez doubled the Vikings lead after he headed in a goal from inside the goal box. The goal was No. 10 on the season for Gomez. The Yellow Jackets finally did get a ball past senior goalie Josh Wells slicing the Vikings lead to 1.

The next goal of the game was crucial and the Vikings got it. Ninkov scored to give the Vikings a two-goal cushion. The Yellow Jackets continued to press the Vikings but Wells stoned them on every attempt.

Senior Nicholas Alexander scored the last goal for the Vikings in the 88th minute to give the Vikings a 4-1 win. The goal was No. 13 for Alexander to lead the team and the conference.

But the star of this match was Gomez and after the game he said he was happy he could help the team get the win. “I ‘m so happy I scored those two goals to help the team get this victory. We really wanted to beat these guys,” Gomez said. The win moves the Vikings into the semi-finals against No. 7 MidAmerica Nazarene.
