Two more soccer goals scored and another victory has Cristian Ronaldo in position to break a record held by Lionel Messi.

Messi tied the record for most goals scored in a UEFA Champions League Tournament with 14 in 2012, according to UEFA.com. José Altafini originally set the standard back in 1963.

Ronaldo is chasing both men and now he is within one goal of the record, after Tuesday’s round of 16 match against Schalke 04. The reigning Footballer of the Year helped Real Madrid win 3-1 by scoring two goals in the match. His total now sits at 13 with only seven games played.

With the win, Real Madrid moves on to the quarterfinals. The pairings for the quarterfinal draws will be announced today, according to ESPN.com. No matter whom Real plays, Ronaldo will have at least two more matches. And given his scoring pace, it wouldn’t be wise to bet against him or underestimate how much he wants the record.
