Ashley Ward scored a season-high 22 points and got six rebounds as The Missouri Valley Women’s Basketball team beat Mount Mercy University 72-58 in a road game on Wednesday 25th January. The team held the lead for the majority of the game.
“When we share the ball great things happen.” Ward said. “We were unselfish and played together. For us to keep winning we need to continue to play as a team and be confident in our abilities.”
Ward believes the Vikings can experience success if they continue to play the same way they did against MMU.
“For us to keep winning we need to continue to play as a team and be confident in our abilities.” Ward said. “Every time we step on the court, we have to think we are the best team!”
Deidra McCoy came up with 14 points and six rebounds against MMU and leads the team in four categories this season; points scored, rebounds, assists and steals. Her stats, however, don’t compare to the winning feeling, she explained.
“I don’t pay attention to my stats.” McCoy said. “As long as I play defense, my teammates get their points, and we win I really don’t care what happens.”
McCoy was named to the 2015-16 NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball All-America Team, but she is completely focused on her team and not individual accolades.
“My personal aim is to keep providing energy for the team and being a leader on and off the court.” McCoy said. “I play for more than just myself, if we play together as a team and keep our heads up knowing we can come out on top in every game then we will start winning more games.”
The team moves to 9-10 with the win, 5-10 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference.
