Missouri Valley men’s wrestling team celebrated senior night with a close win against 15th ranked Baker University. Valley went on to win the duel after a forfeit in the 285 weight class. Missouri Valley entered the dual ranked number two in the country and undefeated against conference opponents.
The vikings honored their seven seniors before the match began. The program will lose seven seniors with a few having all american status. Many of the senior wrestlers entered the dual ranked in their prospective weight classes.
Mike Machholz, head coach of the men’s wrestling team, said this about the senior’s leaving his program.
“Well any time you have seven seniors you know that means you had a class that came and stuck with you and worked very hard. I think it shows this year with our over overall with the mentality of the team. You got some decent leadership. You got guys that are pushing to finish off their careers and some of these guys have had great careers. So it’s great to have them. On the other side it’s really tough because you have to fill seven holes” Machholz said.
Valley went on to win the duel by a score of 20-17 and retain their number two ranking in the latest NAIA poll.
The Vikings will compete again in the Missouri Valley invitational which is a two day event that will be held inside the Grover C. Redford Gymnasium January 14th and 15th and include more than 40 teams including 14 of the top NAIA men’s wrestling programs.
