The Missouri Valley College men’s and women’s tennis teams have celebrated significant wins since the onset of the 2023-24 season.

On Sept. 2, both the men’s and women’s teams faced St. Louis University. Unfortunately, neither team could secure an opening win. The male Vikings were defeated 4-3, while the women lost 7-0.

The following weekend, Sept. 9-10, the Vikings hosted the MVC Invitational Tournament, welcoming Baker and Grand View University. The tournament saw Viking finalists in both singles and doubles.

Just two days later, the women’s team played against Truman State University. The female Vikings showcased skillful, exciting matches and triumphed over their opponents with a 5-2 victory.

On Sept. 23, the teams found success again, competing against Judson University. The Vikings delivered strong performances: the men emerged victorious with a 4-0 score, while the women secured a 5-2 win. Unfortunately, not all matches were played due to inclement weather.

Off the court, the tennis team has also been making strides. Last academic year, the women’s team was recognized on the NAIA Scholar Teams list, boasting the highest GPA of 3.59. Besides their academic accomplishments, the Tennis Vikings actively spread awareness about the critical role of mental health and mindset in sports. They host seminars and meditation classes and share related content on their social media. Moreover, they engage in community service by picking up trash in Marshall’s public parks, consistently raising funds for the team, and supporting fellow college students by cheering them on at home games.

As pre-season play concludes, the Vikings are gearing up for the official tennis season, beginning on Feb. 23, 2024, with a competition at Saint Mary University.
