The Missouri Valley College men’s soccer team clinched the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championship title on Oct. 24, defeating Graceland University 2-0 in a doubleheader at Volney C. Ashford Stadium. This victory marks their second consecutive conference title and fifth under Head Coach Vladimir Simic, securing their top seed for the upcoming Heart Postseason Tournament and an automatic spot in the 2023 NAIA Men’s Soccer National Tournament.

Sam Green and Jacob Adams scored the decisive goals against Graceland, with Adams notching his first of the season. “Winning the conference with a game to spare is a real achievement, and we’re very proud,” Green commented on the team’s success.

Rising to No. 13 in the NAIA Men’s Soccer Coaches’ Top 25 Poll as of Oct. 25, the Vikings have bounced back from an early-season slump, overcoming three non-conference losses. Adams credits the coaching staff for the team’s turnaround, emphasizing the strong group dynamics and camaraderie within the squad.

Kerim Akpinar, a standout player this season, contributed significantly with two hat-tricks in consecutive home games. “Our first goal was winning the conference. Now, we aim to triumph at the nationals. There are no limits,” Akpinar said.

Despite their dominant run, the Vikings experienced a setback with a loss to Central Methodist University on Oct. 11 and a second conference defeat against Benedictine College on Oct. 28.

Green reiterated the challenges of their conference, stating, “It’s possibly the toughest in the country. Anyone can beat anyone, so our convincing win is a significant accomplishment.”

The team is now gearing up for the postseason, with Green highlighting the increased excitement and tension. “If you lose, you’re out. It drives everyone to play their best every game,” he said.

Next, the men’s team will face No. 8 Oklahoma Wesleyan in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, on Oct. 31 at 5 p.m.
