Missouri Valley College is rallying the community for a crucial blood drive on Friday, Nov. 3, in collaboration with the American Red Cross. The event, set in the Malcolm Center Gym, comes at a pivotal time as the organization faces a significant shortfall in blood donations nationwide.
As November begins, the American Red Cross is urgently calling for donors to step forward. The shortage has been particularly acute since late summer, with a pressing need for type O blood and platelet donations. These blood products are vital for patient care during the holiday season, a period traditionally marked by a decrease in donations.
This blood drive is part of a broader effort by the Red Cross to restock hospital supplies.
Prospective donors can schedule an appointment using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting www.RedCrossBlood.org, or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). The eligibility criteria require donors to be at least 17 years old in most states (16 with parental consent where state law permits), weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, and be in generally good health. High school students and other donors 18 years and younger must also meet specific height and weight requirements.
As an incentive, those donating between now and Nov. 9 will receive a $10 Restaurant Gift Card via email. Additionally, they will be entered into a draw to win a $5,000 prize, with details and conditions available at www.rcblood.org/lunch.
The Red Cross is also seeking volunteers to amplify their impact. Volunteer opportunities include becoming a blood donor ambassador to assist in greeting, checking in, and thanking donors, ensuring a positive experience. Transportation specialists are also needed to deliver blood products to hospitals. Those interested in volunteering can find more information at www.redcross.org/volunteertoday.
