College students often possess a sense of invincibility, believing they’ll live forever. Yet, there’s always a sobering moment that brings them back to reality. Now is the time to learn how to protect oneself and prevent such moments.
In observance of STI/STD Awareness Month, the Missouri Valley College Nursing Office is collaborating with the Saline County Health Department to offer free STI testing for interested students.
Their tagline, “Be responsible and take control of your sexual health,” underscores the event’s purpose. The process is straightforward—no appointment or sign-up is necessary. However, students will need to consult with one of the nurses and fill out and sign a form.
Casey Vogelsmeier, the Campus Nurse, emphasized the importance of testing, particularly for college students.
“STIs are most common in younger adolescents and adults,” Vogelsmeier said. “Many students approach us about STI testing, and it’s crucial to be proactive and responsible if you’re sexually active.”
Dr. Susan Vogelsmeier echoed this sentiment, advising, “If they have never been sexually active, then perhaps they don’t need to be tested… But if they’ve ever been sexually active, even if it’s been a while, it’s still advisable.”
STI Testing will take place on two different dates. The first session will be on Tuesday, April 2, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Malcolm Center Parking Lot. The second session will occur the following week, on April 9, at the same time, at the Saline County Health Department.
