Theft on the campus of Misouri Valley College is becoming a growing concern for students. From August 2023 to now we have had 25 recorded incidents of theft which is almost double the amount recorded from last year. The most recent recorded theft was on February 15 in the McDonald hall parking lot.
Many of the theft cases have been unsolved and there have been no descriptions or people caught on camera of who is doing the stealing. When you ask students if they feel safe, many say they don’t feel good parking on campus anymore. Students Jason Williams and Jayden Hardy were among those who spoke with The Delta.
Hardy said he had been the victim of theft on campus three times, having money and Airpods stolen. Hardy said he had not reported the crimes to Public Safety
“I still feel safe,” Hardy said. “We just need more cameras.”
Williams also had items stolen. In his case it was some items of clothing. Like Hardy, he also let the crimes go unreported.
“I’m not tripping on clothes,” he said, adding “It wouldn’t have done anything.”
Director of Public Safety James Goodman, who started in the position this fall, said he noticed the increase in theft of property and public safety is doing extra patrols of the parking lots.
There have also been cameras installed on Missouri Valley College’s campus. Goodman also advises students to lock their vehicles and take out valuable items out of their vehicles.
Goodman said he believes with cameras and extra patrols, the campus is moving in the right direction to make things better and safer for students.
“I can not say it will solve itself but with extra patrol of the parking lots and cameras being added it should help,” he said.
