Missouri Valley College Career Services hosted a career expo in the Malcolm Center Gym on March 27 with over fifty employers with internship, part-time, and full-time opportunities for MVC students.
Katlyn Flowers, MoVal Career Services Coordinator, almost doubled the number of employers at the expo from previous years.
Flowers says she has been calling employers since November to invite them to the Expo. The extensive research Flowers did on employers, even recurring to calling employers she saw on TV, stems from Missouri Valley’s mission to prepare students for their life after graduation.
“We want our students to know that we care about them not only for their freshman, sophomore, and senior years,” Flowers said. “but even after they’ve graduated. We want to begin with the end in mind. We want all of our students here to know that there’s a job for you and your degree here in Missouri Valley matters and you can put that to work.”
Some students are even required by their professors to attend the expo. MVC students, Lucas Andrade and Davi Azevedo, attended the expo as they were required to complete a class assignment.
“We’ve talked to five or six places [so far],” said Andrade. “Everyone is so fun. They show us more opportunities. Because we are international [students] they teach us the process.”
While the expo was very helpful in researching and talking to companies for Azebedo’s business major, Andrade had a hard time finding an employer that would use his Computer Science degree.
“I think Missouri Valley College sometimes forgets about my precise major so I feel bad,” Andrade said. “but I guess it’s gonna be ok. I really want a job because I have just one more year. I need to find some places.”
However, Flowers still has plans to expand and find more employers to bring to Missouri Valley. Some companies such as Hope Center KC and Startland News made their first-ever appearance at the Career Expo last week.
