The Missouri Valley College Dance Ensemble is putting on their spring concert and it is a presentation of Perspective.
The concert will be held at 7 p.m. on April 18 and 19 at 7 p.m. and 2 p.m. on April 20. All performances are in the Eckilson-Mabee Theater.
The performance will showcase the many different perspectives of the dancers. They come from all walks of life and each have their own point of view they are trying to convey with their performance.
“Each dancer views their emotions differently on stage than talking to others.” Dancer Addie Wolfe said, “You get to see what each dancer is going through and what stories go behind it.”
The theme of the show is Perspective and it was decided amongst the dancers and Artistic Director, Torey Spitzig. As the ensemble reviewed all of their pieces they felt as if they came from a perspective of their own rather than someone else looking in.
The dancers portray their own sense of individuality. The pieces incorporated in the show are interpreted from individual perspectives on stories and conversations.
Victoria Heglin is a graduating senior that will be performing her senior showcase at the concert. She has prepared 15-20 minutes of choreography that will be featured in the show.
Artistic Director Torey Spitzig is only one of the many choreographers that helped pull the concert together. Spitzig explains the meaning behind one of her pieces in the show that represents a perspective of grief.
“But not necessarily grieving someone that you’ve lost but grieving a piece of yourself that you’ve lost,” Spitzig said. “So that’s kind of my perspective on grief.”
As it is Spitzig’s first year as Artistic Director, she is determined to help students to find themselves and their voice within dance.
“Giving them the platform to really express who they are as individuals is really important to me,” Spitzig said.
