Missouri Valley College is expanding its residence halls in the upcoming Fall, with its brand new complex called “Marshall Village.”
With the idea of creating similarly styled residence halls like Viking and Valley Village, this building was specifically designed for Freshmen to make their transition into college life easier. The apartments will have four rooms and two bathrooms as well as a living room and a small kitchen area. The rooms will be slightly bigger than in Viking and Valley Village but are meant to host two students per room, therefore fitting a total of eight students per apartment. Marshall Village will be coed, meaning both women and men will be allowed to register for it.
“The idea was to give Freshmen more privacy and to make their transition from high school to college easier and more calm,” Tim Schulte, Vice President of Operations said. “Construction on the building will be done by the Fall but it is uncertain if it will be open for housing students at the beginning of the semester. If not it will for sure be open for the Spring semester of 2025.”
Funding the new housing buildings was made possible by entering a cooperative with the city of Marshall, who received a million-dollar grant from the US government, which didn’t fit into their goals and plans at the time. The college representative therefore recommended that they transfer the grant to Missouri Valley College in order to fund new housing opportunities.
Isabela Harp who is in her second year at Missouri Valley seemed semi excited to hear about the new residence hall.
“I live in the Valley Village Apartments and I really like living there, so I don’t think I would be interested in moving into the new apartments because I enjoy having my own room,” Harp said. “I think the college should invest more money into the already existing apartments than to build new residence halls.”
Ruben Fernandez, another MVC student who lives in the Valley Village Apartments, is excited to see the new building.
“I think there are many students who would like to live in the Viking or Valley Apartments, who will now have a higher chance of getting into an apartment,” he said. “It will open up more room for students and it is closer to the center of campus.”
