Missouri Valley College is hosting a weeklong theatre camp for high school students July 18-26 at in the Eckilson-Mabee Theatre.
This camp will be open to all high-school students from ninth to twelfth grade with an interest in performing and technical theatre. However, students don’t need to have taken theater classes to participate to this camp.
This will be the first theatre camp organized at Missouri Valley College by Sandy Welty, theatre director at Rock Bridge High School in Columbia. She plans to organize others in the coming years.
“The stage is such a special place and Missouri Valley College has the perfect space to bring people together to create story telling magic,” she said. “We hope to make this an annual summer event.”
The program of this camp will be intense. An average day will be: wake up early, rehearse, build scenery, sing, costumes, lunch, rehearse, dinner, rehearse, evening activities. During this week, students will product the performance of Beauty and the Beast Jr, that they will play on July, 26.
“This is a 100% full student production,” Welty said.
This summer camp is an amazing opportunity for students to deep into the world of theatre and having fun.
“It will be a very fast-paced week getting a show on its feet. It will be group of fun-loving creative people creating memories and friendships of a lifetime,” Welty said.
For Welty, theatre is an important art.
“Theatre provides so many opportunities for people to take place in the oldest artform of storytelling,” she said. “Story telling reminds us of our humanity and the role being part of a community.”
