Missouri Valley College held its annual Chalk Competition, where students had their opportunity to let their artistic side show for everyone to see.

Students expressed their creativity in a variety of styles.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, students in their free time would go in front of the Murrell Library and use the chalk provided to them to draw whatever they wanted in order to win a prize.

The drawings ranged from writing in different languages, characters from the popular franchise, Pokemon, beautiful drawings of animals, even recreations of famous historical paintings.

In particular, student Jazmine Hernandez drew a recreation of the famous painting “The Stary Night”, made famous by historic artist Vincent Van Gough. Hernandez commented on why she chose this painting as well as her enjoyment of the competition.

Chalk Polaroids were just one of many ideas students shared.

“I love to draw, and any opportunity I get to draw I would do, so the chalk competition is a great way to express how I feel,” Hernandez said. “Since it’s Earth Day I wanted to express the night.”

In addition, Library Circulation Services and Professor Bathesheba Love  expressed her feelings about the event.

“We saw some very beautiful art and I really enjoyed the students create it,” Love said. “It’s a really beautiful way to show expression, it’s therapeutic, it’s creative, it’s all around fun. It also gives that elementary type of feeling of when you’re a kid and you’re playing with your crayons.”

Chloe Vico adds finishing touches to her artwork.
