MVC plans to change its recruitment priorities to help teams that haven’t been able to meet their recruitment goals. This means teams like football, men’s and women’s soccer and baseball will recruit fewer people. This will allow teams like bowling and esports to recruit more people.

President Joseph Parisi explained the process and is excited to help rosters with fewer people.

“If a student says they want to be a college athlete we are going to give them that opportunity,” he said. “The objective is to re-engineer how we are recruiting, and what programs do we need to recruit to specifically.”

President Parisi expressed the need to recruit to teams who need the help rather than the teams that already have big rosters. Parisi also expressed interest in recruiting for academics as well.

“Let’s recruit towards academic specific programs, speech and debate, and DECA and give them the opportunity to grow and enhance their programs,” Parisi said.

Athletic Director Mike Macholz also expressed his opinions on the topic.

“We have always tried to recruit more academic people, but it is becoming more of a push from myself and the president’s office,” he said

As word spreads of the change in focus, students are expressing mixed feelings. Sophomore football player Michael Wissman said he felt the move has both positive and negative possibilities.

“I think it is good to help out the teams and give opportunities outside of sports,” he said. “But I also feel like it’s not fair to make rosters smaller over the years when we really do need these people.”
