Following an incident near the conclusion of a home soccer game versus rival Central Methodist University, Missouri Valley College has stepped up its enforcement of rules regarding fans on the football field.

Spectators are reminded that people are not allowed on the field during and after competitions. While this has been a rule for a while, MVC posted signs and began announcing reminders multiple times at games following the Sept. 17 soccer match.

That game had been tied 0-0 until the final minutes when Valley scored. An excited group of students ran toward the field and then-Athletic Director Mike Machholz moved to intercept them. In the chaos, Machholz made contact with a student who fell to the ground and suffered some scrapes. When video of the incident began to circulate on social media, Machholz was suspended. After three weeks of suspension, Machholz’s employment with MVC ended.

When asked why MoVal is being more strict on this rule Director of Marketing and Communications Scott Queen said, “This is very common at many schools. Nothing new or different, we’re just trying to be crystal clear.”

While rushing the field in celebration may be part of the college sports experience for some, most at MVC say they understand and accept the policy the school is enforcing.

“I do agree with the policy because I just think it is safer,” said student Laura Corbin. “However, I do think this policy is more enforced because of the events that transpired at the CMU soccer game.”

Regardless of the timing or cause, football player Michael Wissman said he thinks it is more convenient for players with the increased enforcement.

“It is easier to get to the locker room and find family after the game,” he said.
