Missouri Valley College’s Thor’s Pantry has applied for a corporate grant from Swipe Out Hunger, an organization dedicated to addressing food insecurity on college campuses. If awarded, the grant will provide MVC students with essential resources, including food, winter coats, and bedding.
Heather Troth, Executive Director of the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance, authored the grant. She’s committed to reducing food insecurity at MVC. “Hunger is a huge issue on college campuses, both for off-campus and on-campus students,” Troth said. “It’s often overlooked because of the cafeteria, but not everyone can go during cafeteria hours. Some students don’t have cars, and even if they make it to Walmart, they often don’t have the money to afford groceries. Our goal is to fill the gap so students have access to everything they need.”
Graduate Assistant Tyra McKenzie, who works at Thor’s Pantry, also relies on its resources. “Thor’s Pantry is important to me because, as a student who may not have access to rides, it allows me to utilize their assistance,” McKenzie said. “I work at Thor’s Pantry because I know how hard it can be to get access to what I need. Thor’s Pantry helps take some of the worry away.”
For some MVC students, Thor’s Pantry was an unknown resource. “I think Thor’s Pantry is an incredible thing,” said student Meghan Ansani. “To have something on campus that offers things students often have trouble getting is amazing.”
Originally run by the Student Affairs Office, Thor’s Pantry was challenging to keep open due to limited staff and scheduling conflicts. The MVC Nonprofit Leadership Alliance has since taken over, ensuring the pantry remains stocked and accessible to students. Thor’s Pantry provides access to frozen food, snacks, hygiene products, and it accepts requests for other essential items.
Thor’s Pantry is open Mondays and Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is located behind MacDonald Hall. For urgent needs, students can contact Heather Troth to arrange an after-hours appointment.
