A shooting at the Living Room Bar early Sunday left multiple people injured and one Valley student in the hospital.
According to a press release from the Marshall Police Department, the incident took place around 1:20 a.m. Sunday as patrons were leaving the establishment at closing time. The release states that four people sought medical treatment locally, with one later being transferred to the University of Missouri Hospital.
Missouri Valley College issued a statement Sunday night confirming that one of the victims was a student. The statement said the student was in stable condition after surgery and his parents were at his side.
The remaining three victims were treated for their injuries and released from the hospital. Official releases did not elaborate on the nature of those injuries, but witness accounts indicate two suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds while the third was struck by a vehicle fleeing the scene.
Witnesses, who spoke with The Delta on the condition of anonymity as the suspect was still at large, felt shocked and scared during the event.
“The bar had closed, so we were all leaving,” recounted one witness. “A fight broke out in the parking lot, and then we heard the gun. We were super confused because we aren’t used to the use of guns and we thought it was just a firework. We never imagined the situation was that dangerous, so we were all in shock.”
Another Missouri Valley College student who witnessed the shooting had similar feelings of disbelief.
“I was very shaken up because I haven’t been through anything like that,” they said. “You wouldn’t expect that in Marshall, Missouri, but this stuff can happen anywhere.”
While it is still unclear exactly what occurred, Marshall police confirmed that a suspect has been identified and information regarding the case has been forwarded to Saline County Prosecuting Attorney Tim Thompson. However, formal charges had not been filed as of press time.
