The academic year is coming to an end at Missouri Valley College, and Resident Assistants (RAs) are getting ready for the last dorm inspections. According to resident assistants, these inspections are interesting, bizarre, or just surprising, but last year’s experiences have prepared residential life staff to see it all in these upcoming final days.
While most students pack everything up, some just leave everything to the last minute and some items get left behind in the dorms.
“Nothing too crazy, but I remember finding between six or seven AC units and mini-fridges. All of them were in top condition,” said I. Lorente, a graduating RA.
But not all discoveries are this type of electronics. Estefano Del Aguila, RA from Blosser Hall mentions that his findings surprised him.
“Blosser is just different…I found a homemade bong. I was amazed for the creativity,” he said.
On the other hand, Ignacio Vazquez remembers when doing his final round before leaving campus he found a couple of soccer balls.
“It’s crazy, but I remember finding at least two soccer balls,” he said. “They were not in good shape, but good enough to play for a while.”
Other RAs agree that on several occasions they found different dorms very dirty or even food leftovers and they have to report it. MoVal charges students different fees if they find that the room was damaged or something is not as it was at the start of semester.
RAs speculate that in the rush of finals and moving out, some students just decide that certain items are not worth taking. As move out dates approach, housing department encourages to leave rooms as found so they don’t have to issue any fines and in that way Resident Life staff has an easier job and can also enjoy their summer.
