MVC public safety has begun issuing parking tickets to unregistered vehicles on campus. Vice President of Student Affairs Dr. Terry Russell issued an email during the first week of the fall semester, warning students that parking tickets would be issued on September 10th.
To park on campus, you must register your vehicle and purchase an MVC parking decal. According to MVC’s parking policy, unregistered vehicles parked on campus receive a $50 fine for a first-time offense and will be towed for further offenses. Repeated violations may also result in loss of parking privileges on campus for the offender.
Parking decals are $100 for two semesters and are now only available for purchase in the Student Affairs office. This cost has risen since last year, and some students feel that the price to register a vehicle is too expensive.
“I think $100 is way too expensive for a parking decal,” said student Julia Brown. “Everything [on campus] is so close anyways, I’m just paying to park my car.” Although Brown does not agree with the cost, she still paid to have her vehicle registered. For a lot of students, having a car is essential for productivity. The notable convenience of having a vehicle on campus is important to students like Brown.
Student J.R. Reed said; “It is important for me to have my car here because I’m from Texas.” Reed said its crucial for him to have his car to get to practice, the grocery store and the gym without having to rely on someone else for a ride. Although some students feel the price to register your vehicle is too expensive, students like Brown and Reed, still believe having a vehicle is worth the fee.
Although having a vehicle is convenient, it is not needed to be a successful student. Most events, pracices and classes are on campus. MVC also supplies a weekly shuttle to Wal-Mart for students.
