Midterms are approaching sooner than ever, and this presents an opportunity for students to boost their grades, identify areas for improvement and prepare for the final stretch of the course. They can be stressful, but with good time management, review sessions and study groups, they’re also a great opportunity to solidify knowledge before exams.

When asked how students can better manage midterms, Kelly Fuemmeler, Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities, said preparation and steady study habits make the biggest difference

“One of the best ways is not to wait until the last minute, and it’s not any different than any other exam; you’re covering the material as you go, and it would be a good idea to study, especially if they give a study review or session,” Fuemmeler said. “Also, take notes and get a pen and paper, and studying helps you better understand the knowledge than if you’re typing on a computer, and also know that midterms are not the end of the world, and don’t give up.”

When asked for strategies to help students cope and prepare for midterms, Professor Dr. Katherine Armstrong said:

“You know the exam is coming, so don’t wait and take every day to prepare for it and do a chapter a day, it helps to relax your mind and prepares you for the exam and gets you comfortable.”

When asked how she handles midterms and prepares for exams, MVC student Candace Alabi said:

“For midterms, I study that’s for sure, but before midterms arrive, I make sure that I understand all my materials during my classes so when my exams are around the corner, it won’t be too much work for me,” Alabi said. “I spend about 3-4 hours every evening studying and maybe, honestly, even more depending on the length of the material that’s being discussed.”

MVC student Jayden Franklin said he adjusted his study habits based on the course.

“Yes, and it depends on the course for me, other than I’m locked in,” Franklin said, “but if it’s math, for example, I gotta be dialed in for my main courses.”
