The Valley Canteen in Marshall was filled with Missouri Valley College students and local residents on January 31, as the venue hosted a themed night inspired by LMFAO, the pop duo behind the 2011 hit “Sexy and I Know It.”

Neon lights, cheetah-print outfits and loud music set the atmosphere inside the bar, where crowds gathered around televisions broadcasting a live UFC fight, creating a sharp contrast to the ten-degree temperatures outside.

Students at MVC say the Canteen’s location and atmosphere make it one of the most popular hangouts near campus. Senior Brittney Slocum said the bar’s convenience is part of the appeal.

“It’s just down the street from the school, so it’s walkable. It’s easy to get here,” she said.

Another senior, Audrey Short, enjoys the entertainment options available.

“There’s always something to do — pool tables, pong games or just people-watching,” she explained. Ella Dillon described the environment as “lowkey, friendly and inclusive,” adding that “everyone gets along here.”

Locals share a similar appreciation for the Canteen’s atmosphere. Ben Newman, of Slater, said he visits occasionally and enjoys the energy college students bring.

“I come here in the summer from time to time,” he said. “I think the college students make it better, the more the merrier. It really brings up the atmosphere.”

Regulars also note that the Canteen’s affordable drink prices and rotating theme nights help keep things fresh and appealing to both students and the community.

Although another bar in town, The Living Room known locally as “The Liv” once drew a large student crowd, many now say they prefer the Valley Canteen. After a shooting involving a student occurred there a year ago, the atmosphere around The Liv has changed.

Today, the Valley Canteen stands out as a central gathering place for Missouri Valley College students and Marshall locals, a spot where good music, themed events and a welcoming crowd continue to define the town’s nightlife.
