As spring approaches, students at MVC are updating their playlists to match the season. Students are turning to a mix of indie pop, reggae, country and Latin hits to shape their moods for the second half of the semester.
Junior Chloe Shuff said her music choices stay consistent but shift slightly with the weather. She said she usually listens to indie pop, but starts adding different genres as it gets warmer.
“I usually listen to my day-to-day music, which is indie pop,” Shuff said. “But when it gets warmer, I love switching to reggae music because it reminds me of home in California.”
Shuff said music is part of her daily routine, especially when she is studying or walking to class. She added that certain songs instantly can brighten her mood.
“Funkytown by Lipps Inc., I love the vibe of the song and beat, it’s my feel-good song,” Shuff said.
Her spring playlist reflects that upbeat energy, featuring a mix of older hits and newer songs, such as “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!” by ABBA, “Edge of Seventeen” by Stevie Nicks and “Sundress” by A-S-A-P Rocky.
Sophomore Brennan Nickerson says his music taste changes more noticeably with the season. He says his spring playlists are all about outdoor vibes.
“During the spring, I usually listen to either Latin or country music,” Nickerson said. “I’ll listen to songs about being on a boat and outside.”
Nickerson says he listens to music most while driving, where songs like “Margaritaville” by Jimmy Buffett and “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere” by Alan Jackson fit the spring atmosphere. He also includes a mix of genres in his playlist, from “Ella Baila Sola” by Eslabon Armado to “Neon Moon” by Brooks and Dunn.
Junior Nestus Burger said his music taste varies, but spring pushes him towards the more upbeat and energetic songs.
“Lots of dad rock, E-D-M, techno [and] lots of 80s stuff like Metallica,” Burger said. “I’ve never been a big fan of rap. I like a lot of 2000s songs.”
Burger said warmer weather brings a shift toward music that feels more social and high-energy.
“More house music and going out type of music like Calvin Harris,” Burger said.
“Some songs just feel like summer.”
He added that music is always a part of his day.
“I listen to music all of the time, mostly when I’m just chilling in my room,” Burger said. “I will always have background music playing, it’s never quiet.”
Burger’s spring playlist includes songs like “Summer” and “I’m Not Alone” by Calvin Harris, “Ocean Drive” by Duke Dumont, and throwback hits like “All the Small Things” by Blink-182 and “Summer of ‘69” by Bryan Adams.
Students say music plays an important role in setting the tone for the season. Whether it is studying, driving, or just relaxing, playlists are helping Missouri Valley students transition into spring.
