Internships are a key part of the college experience, giving students the chance to gain hands-on knowledge. For international students, however, the process includes additional academic and administrative steps.
At Missouri Valley College, students must first meet with an academic advisor to request enrollment in the internship program. They are also required to sign a student internship contract outlining the objectives and responsibilities of the experience.
For international students, the process becomes more detailed. Director of International Admissions Yesenia Farfan says students must first receive a job offer, enroll the internship for academic credit and obtain approval from a Designated School Official. They must also be issued an updated Form I-20 authorizing employment.
“It is important to note that students cannot begin an internship without both academic approval and proper immigration authorization,” Farfan said.
Students are encouraged to begin the process early, typically three to six months in advance, especially when applying for competitive positions. They must also meet eligibility requirements, including completing at least one academic year before qualifying for Curricular Practical Training.
Two primary programs available to international students are Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and Optional Practical Training (OPT). CPT allows students to work while enrolled, as long as the position directly relates to their major. OPT, on the other hand, provides work experience after graduation and can last up to 12 months.
International student Jana Latorre said the OPT process can be slow and complicated due to additional requirements.
“The process is being a little slow,” Latorre said. “This year, they asked us to go to Kansas City to take photos and fingerprints to verify our identity. It took about a month just to get that appointment, and when you have the appointment, the process pauses. Normally, it takes two to five months, but mine hasn’t been approved yet,”
Student Vicente Benitez said OPT provides valuable opportunities for international students.
“OPT is a work permit that you get for one year, and you can work anywhere as long as it is related to your major,” Benitez said.
Despite the added steps and longer timelines, internships remain an important opportunity for international students to gain experience and prepare for their careers.
