Power lifting team looking forward to second season

The MVC Powerlifting team is beginning its second year as a program and many people believe the season is looking promising.

Head coach David Edwards is excited about the season, because of the increase in numbers they have for this year. Edwards said there are at least 14 new participants since last year, which is a pretty good number for their second year.

Elijah Lovins is a freshman from St. Louis, who has already reached multiple personal records on squat, and will be participating in the heavyweight class. Lovins is a first year powerlifter, but he says he feels good about his first year and so far he is having fun.

There has been some changes made to the powerlifting team’s practices since last year. The first year, Edwards scheduled three practices a week, two on their own and one as a team, but this year there are four practices a week and they are all team lifts.

The team lifts in Burns Gym, because the racks are similar to what they’ll be using at competitions. Edwards likes what he’s seeing in practice, but was reluctant to comment on how the young lifters are transitioning from high school to the college level.

“We’ve only had one week of official practice, so it’s too early to tell, but I’ve noticed different strengths in lifts,”  he said.

Despite the youth of the team, Assistant Coach Michael Wilson has high expectations for the team this year. Wilson believes the team has a better opportunity for nationals, since they actually have depth to the roster. Wilson said junior Logan Eden, who is more accustomed to crossfit than powerlifting, and freshman Luke Mellon both have potential to do well this season.
