Review: ‘Free Guy’ delivers laughs, action

By Colton Crawford/ Delta Staff Writer

The movie Free Guy (2021) is an extremely unique and entertaining film packed full with action, comedy, and romance combined in one. The film is very original, and I have never watched a movie that is comparable to the plot. I would compare this film favorably to a combination of action video games and science fiction films like The Matrix, Ready Player One, Grand Theft Auto, or Fortnite.

The acting was on point, Ryan Reynolds, who stars in similar action comedies like DeadPool, The Green Lantern, and the Hitman’s Guard did his usual charismatic, quirky, and quick witted acting. Which always gets the audience laughing and engaged. Supporting actors like Jodie Comer and Joe Keery added romance to the movie, which gave the film the perfect twist. Each character has their own way of being special to build the intensity of the movie. The comedy within the film is extremely funny, and natural along with Ryan Reynolds witty humor thus making it PG-13. Rather than using inappropriate humor most modern day movies use, this movie has family friendly comedy, and will simply make you laugh without much of an effort. If you are into Science Fiction action comedies this movie will be right up your alley.

In Free Guy, Ryan Reynolds, acting as “Guy” is a simple lifed bank teller who realizes that there is more than meets the eye behind his bland repetitive life. He falls in love with Jodie Comer, who is known as “Molotov Girl”, or “ Millie” and he soon finds out he is the background player in a Free world video game called Free City. Guy decides to be the hero of his own world, and does everything he can to save his life along with his friends.

Free Guy was directed by SCI-FI director Shawn Levy, who also directed films like Real Steal and Arrival. With a year long delay due to Covid, Free Guy was released through theaters in the United States on August 13, 2021, in RealD 3D, and IMAX formats. The film made a

gross profit of $276 million worldwide, making it the seventh highest grossing film of 2021.
