Starting in Fall 2025, Missouri Valley College will revise its campus housing pricing system, shifting from a four-tier model to a new three-tier structure based solely on room type. Nearly 20 residence halls will be reclassified under this system, which groups rooms into singles, doubles, and triples or more—removing the previous focus on building location or age.

In an email sent to students, Dean of Students Terry Russel explained the reason behind the update:
“Starting this fall, there has been an adjustment to our tier structure based on fairness and amenities. All single rooms, all double rooms, all triples, and more have a tier change.”

The updated pricing is as follows:

  • Tier 1 – Single rooms: $3,250 per semester
  • Tier 2 – Double rooms: $3,000 per semester
  • Tier 3 – Triple or more occupancy: $2,750 per semester

Junior Valentin Alvarez noted that while the system provides a clearer organizational structure, some students may find the transition frustrating.

“I guess it’s complicated for students who are trying to move into newer buildings, but these new tiers are an easy way for the school to divide all buildings,” he said. “Anyway, minimum requirements should be the same in all dorms.”

Previously, residence halls like Redman, Blackburn Hall, and Blosser Hall were considered Tier 1, while Valley Village and Viking Village fell under Tier 4. Under the new plan, those apartment-style complexes will now move to Tier 1, despite differences in building age and amenities.

Concerns have emerged among students who feel the changes don’t account for disparities in housing quality. For example, students in older buildings like Young Hall will pay more for a single room than students in newer double rooms in buildings like Conway.

Junior M. Sansone expressed mixed feelings about the shift.

“I am happy because I will be staying at my single dorm at one of the best buildings at MoVal, but I do understand student complaints when they pay the same being at older dorms that don’t have the same amenities,” he said.
