With less than a month left in the school year, Missouri Valley College students are starting to plan their trips home and get prepared for move-out, with travel plans varying depending on how far they live from campus.

Students who live nearby can often take belongings home in multiple trips, while others must leave items behind.

Murrell Library accepts donations from students who cannot bring everything they have back with them. Samantha Perkins, Assistant Dean of Library and Academic Support Services,, explained that library staff uses these donations to help future students who are in need of certain items.

“We then take those donated items, and we have a welcome back garage sale in August. It’s a good way to welcome those students back to campus, offer them some great deals on some gently used items, and then use that money for a fundraiser,” said Perkins

The items that may not be useful to you anymore could benefit someone,

“Everything is going to go back into the community and help benefit everybody, so don’t trash your items; maybe you can’t make use of it, but somebody else may really need it,” said Perkins.

Student Isaiah Clark can make multiple trips home,

“I already started bringing some things home with me last weekend, so then when I actually do gotta move out, it’s way easier, and I won’t have as much to worry about bringing back.” Said Isaiah Clark.

Traveling back for students in the state of Missouri, and even in the United States, is much simpler than for students outside of the U.S.

“Yeah, I’m going to have to leave behind a lot of things in my room, like my TV, my fridge and things like that. I can’t bring much back, only like a bag, since I’m traveling back to Germany. But most of all, I’m gonna leave behind all my friends, and I’m really sad I’m gonna have to say goodbye to them,” student Felix Holzer said.

Although not being able to take everything students want and need back with them, they are leaving behind much more than just some items. Throughout the year, many friendships were built, and as some choose to stay here at MVC and as some choose to leave, those friendships that were made are also something they are leaving behind.

In the end, much more is lost at the end of the year than most realize. Yes, some are forced to leave behind some expensive things, but those friendships made throughout the year feel like even more of a loss.
