With the spring semester coming to an end, students across Missouri Valley College are beginning to think about their summer plans. After a long year of exams, homework and academic stress, many say they are looking forward to a break.
For many students, “home” is not Marshall, Missouri, or even nearby. With a diverse student population at Missouri Valley College, many students travel long distances to see family and friends during the summer.
While some students plan to spend their summer relaxing, others will use the time to work and earn money.
“Once school ends, I’m going to go back to France and work for like 2 months.” Said Kylian Semchaoui. “It’s a good chance for me to make some money before having to come back to school.”
For many students, summer jobs also help offset the cost of tuition, especially for out-of-state students, and provide financial support for the upcoming academic year.
For student-athletes, summer also brings a shift in focus from team competition to individual training. Many athletes use the break to improve skills and prepare for the upcoming season.
“College basketball is a very physical game and takes lots of skill; during the summer, I’m just focused on getting better every day,” said Mykel Rachel.
Because of the wide range of student backgrounds at MVC, summer travel looks different for everyone. Some students travel only an hour or two, while others book flights that take them across the country or overseas. For some, returning home is a rare opportunity after months away from family.
Travel and vacations are often on hold until the semester ends, as students prepare to reset and recharge after a demanding academic year.
“I live on an island, so I’ll spend a lot of time on the beach already,” said Jaime Llabres Cabrera. “Then after a while I’m going on a trip to Spain at Puerto de Santa Maria with some of my friends and will be there for five days.”
As the semester wraps up, students say summer provides a chance to reset, reconnect with family and friends and prepare for the next school year. While some will focus on work or athletics, others are looking forward to well-earned rest and travel.
