The Quad is usually a place for Missouri Valley students to gather. This week, the heat had other plans.

Extreme temperatures forced several campus activities indoors and changed how some services operate as students make their way through an unusually hot start to September.

The Involvement Fair, originally planned for the Quad, was moved inside the Malcolm Center because of the heat. Student organizations still gathered for the event, giving students the chance to learn about clubs, organizations and other ways to get involved on campus without spending hours outside in the high temperatures.

Pops with Profs made the same move. Originally planned for the Quad, the event was relocated inside Malcolm, where students could grab a frozen treat and spend time with professors while getting a break from the heat.

The weather has also affected where students can eat.

Missouri Valley Dining Services temporarily adjusted cafe operations from Sept. 1 through Sept. 4. The cafe is open to all guests from 6 to 8:30 p.m. with all stations available. QDOBA has continued operating on its regular schedule.

The changes come as Marshall experiences an unusually hot start to September. Temperatures reached 93 degrees Tuesday afternoon, with the heat index making it feel closer to 101 degrees.

Despite the intense heat, Marshall has not broken its early-September temperature records. Historic highs for the first few days of September sit above 100 degrees.

The numbers may not be enough to rewrite Marshall’s record books, but they have been enough to rewrite plans around campus.

For students, that has meant checking for location changes before heading to an event, spending more time indoors and finding ways to escape the heat between classes.

The heat may not be breaking records, but it has certainly changed the first week of September at Missouri Valley University.
