Marshall Municipal Utilities officials discussed potentially involving local real estate agencies in addressing ongoing sewer problems during the Board of Public Works meeting Wednesday, Oct. 14.

The discussion focused on inflow and infiltration (I&I), which occurs when rainwater and groundwater enter the sanitary sewer system through damaged pipes, foundation drains and improper connections.

Board member Chuck Hines discussed the possibility of working with real estate agents to make homeowners aware of sewer issues before selling their properties.

“I just thought that, that might be an avenue to maybe better educate people about it,” Hines said.

Hines also suggested that MMU consider offering financial incentives to encourage homeowners to correct problems on their properties.

Underground Facilities Director Grant Piper said MMU has already gathered estimates from local plumbers to determine the potential cost of repairs.

The board considered whether sewer inspections could eventually become part of the homebuying process, allowing buyers to identify problems before purchasing a property.

Board members also discussed potential drawbacks of the proposed improvements, including the financial burden that could be placed on prospective homebuyers.

No formal action was taken, but the board indicated it would continue exploring possible solutions to reduce excess water entering the sanitary sewer system.
