Everyone at Missouri Valley College’s Mass Communication Departments has at times heard about how big the University of Missouri Mass Communication department is.
Missouri Valley College used influences from the Mizzou to host its own mini film festival for its Mass Communications department students. Valley has created its own festival for its documentary students can release their works into the public.
“I go every year and see at least three or four documentaries,” Documentary student at Missouri Valley College Anna Babiak said “I love seeing the different topics at the festival, one of my favorite ones was called bisbe’ in 2017 about miners in bisbee who protested working conditions and the government sent in trains into the desert to die out as a result. Watching this inspired me to take the documentary class and now that I am working on my own film I have been watching and working keeping everything I have seen in the past and keeping that in mind.”
The documentary class at Missouri Valley allows students who are in the broadcasting department work on their storytelling, film, editing, and interviewing portion of the field. The students pitch ideas and after the ideas are approved the work begins. Each student conducts interviews, research, and film to them create a documentary.
One students Alex Perez is putting together a film on Missouri Valley College’s NLA group. The NLA group.
“This project has been a constant job,” Perez said “My journey with my documentary has been very stressful, but at the same time it will be the biggest project I ever put together. It takes a lot of effort and dedication to put together a project like this. There is no such thing in taking the easy way out of it, it just does not exist. You must to do the work. I admit, sometimes I look back and say why did I take this class but at the end of the day everything happens for a reason. All I can say is I can’t wait to be done with it and I hope anyone who attends the film, likes it.”
The class consists of five students with five different stories. The stories range from, All-Americans, Caffeine, First generation college students, and a feature on Pam Sebastian. Each student will introduce then play their documentaries for the public.
The festival is held at the Eckilson- Mabee Theater. They will take place at 10, 11, 12, 1, and 2. Flyers will be posted at a later date. Babiak starts the interview with the “Angel of Moval” at 11 and the final showing at 2 when Perez presents “Where it all began.”
