Open Mic Poetry Slam making its return to MVC

By Austin Bohlen / Delta Staff Writer

MVC’s Debate Team, English Division, Sigma Tau Delta, and the Murrell Library have worked to put the poetry slam together. The event will be held at 6 p.m. April 17 outside of the Murrell Library.

Missouri Valley College will host an Open Mic and Poetry Slam event for students as the semester begins to wind down.

The Open Mic and Poetry Slam will give students the chance to display their writing talents in front of a live audience. The event will be held outside to help limit any potential spread of COVID-19. Margot Mirabal, the Public Relations and Outreach Specialist for the Murrell Library, spoke about the motivations to have an event like this on campus.

“I know that with COVID, we haven’t had many events on campus,” Mirabal said. “So we’re trying to at least have one fun event that anybody can enjoy whether to participate or to support their friends.”

The event will also have a food truck and a bake sale for students.

“It’s kind of nice for all the students that don’t have a car and want to do something on weekends,” Mirabal said. “So we’re excited about that part too.

Registration for the event starts at 5 p.m. with the activities scheduled to start an hour later. The event will be moved inside the Murrell Library if it starts to rain that evening.
