Missouri Valley College recognized top students during its annual Scholar Academic Awards Banquet, honoring academic achievement across majors.

The event featured students selected by faculty based on academic performance and overall commitment to their education.

Cynthia Bice, vice president for academic affairs, said the banquet reflects the college’s academic mission.

“Through the Scholar Academic Awards Banquet, we are able to acknowledge the very best of Missouri Valley College intentionally; our students’ academic success, the commitment that drives their success, and the faculty who mentor and guide them along the way,” Bice said.

Students are nominated through a selection process that considers more than grades.

“Faculty nominates students who not only excel academically in terms of their GPA, but also those who take a conscientious approach toward education,” Bice explained.

Joe Alsobrook, vice president for strategic initiatives and online operations, said the banquet highlights students who balance multiple responsibilities.

“The Scholar Banquet gives us the chance to formally recognise and congratulate MVC students who have shown great academic excellence,” Alsobrook said. “It recognises those students who have excelled in academics but also manage to maintain their campus life, extracurricular activities, athletic events, work and other commitments.”

Students said the recognition reflects both their work and the support they receive from faculty.

Daijah White, a mass communication student, said the award represents more than individual success.

“I am very excited about winning the scholar award because it is not just about me; it also shows the hard work of my professors,” she said.

White explained that the backing from the professors contributed a great deal to her success.

“Learning in a caring environment makes me want to perform better,” White stated.

White said hands-on experience at Missouri Valley prepared her for a career in sports media.

“Working at KMVC news, The Delta, and the radio station has made me feel ready to launch my career,” White said.

Elizabeth Riggs, an exercise science student, said the award allowed her to reflect on her progress.

“Receiving the scholar was quite meaningful to me since it has enabled me to assess my achievements,” she noted. “This way, I could realise what a great success I’ve already reached.”

She mentioned that good support and proper organisation were crucial for succeeding.

“It would not have been possible without the efforts of my advisors, and keeping myself organised has also contributed significantly,” she remarked.

She said she plans to pursue a master’s degree in dietetics.
