A Sedalia woman is facing multiple felony charges stemming from the incident Monday that sent a Missouri Valley College student to the hospital with critical injuries. 

According to court records, Kelsey Chalfant, 27, was charged Tuesday with driving while intoxicated resulting in serious injury and second degree assault. Both those charges are class D felonies. Chalfant was also charged with class A misdemeanor careless and imprudent driving involving an accident. 

The probable cause affidavit filed in the case alleges that Chalfant was the driver of the vehicle that struck MVC soccer player Julian Marøy as he was crossing Morrow Street in the crosswalk near Conway Avenue. 

When officers arrived at the scene just before 8 a.m. Monday, they observed Chalfant sitting in a Toyota Camry about 50 feet from where Marøy was being treated. Officers made contact with Chalfant and observed that her speech was “slurred and confused.”

Court records indicate Chalfant told authorities that she had consumed two alcoholic beverages in the hours prior to the crash and used marijuana products the day before. She agreed to take a field sobriety test and officers observed signs of impairment. 

Chalfant consented to provide a preliminary breath sample, which indicated a blood alcohol content of .000. A subsequent blood sample was taken, but the results were not included in the court records.

According to Missouri court records, Chalfant has a prior conviction for driving while intoxicated in Pettis County in 2019. 

Following her arraignment Tuesday, Chalfant remains in custody without bail at the Saline County Criminal Justice Center. Her next hearing is scheduled for August 19.
