Although the start of classes is still a few weeks away, dozens of student-athletes have already returned for preseason practices. Tragically, one of those students was critically injured in a pedestrian-vehicle collision on Monday.

According to information released by Missouri Valley College, Julian Marøy was struck by a car while using the crosswalk to cross Morrow Street near the Burns Athletic Complex Monday morning. An off-duty EMT was nearby and began treatment almost immediately. Marshall emergency medical services, along with police and firefighters, also responded, treating Marøy prior to his transport to Columbia by air ambulance.

Marøy, an international student from Norway, was a recent addition to the men’s soccer program. MVC’s news release said his family has been notified.

Marøy remained in the ICU Tuesday morning when faculty, staff, coaches and students gathered on the campus quad to offer prayer and support. 

According to a news release issued by the Marshall Police Department, Marøy was struck by a Toyota Camry. The driver of that vehicle remained at the scene and was eventually taken into custody by officers and transported to the police station.

The release states that information has been forwarded to the county prosecutor’s office for the consideration of formal charges. 

The release also encourages drivers to use this incident as a reminder to remain alert for pedestrians, especially with the start of the new school year quickly approaching. Motorists are encouraged to use extra caution while traveling near schools, school zones, crosswalks, bus stops, and residential areas where children and other pedestrians may be present.

Drivers should reduce their speed, remain alert for pedestrians, avoid distractions, and be prepared to stop. Motorists are also reminded to obey school-zone speed limits, crossing guards, school bus signals, and all traffic-control devices.
