A pair of sevens was the winning hand for Missouri Valley’s women’s soccer goalkeeper Lola Martinez Benitez.
She is the first Viking in the women’s soccer program history to earn NAIA Defensive Player of the Week honors, making seven saves in Missouri Valley’s 1-0 win against No. 18 Benedictine and seven more saves in the Vikings’ 1-1 draw against St. Ambrose.
Martinez Benitez was also named the Heart Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for her play. The win against Benedictine was the third consecutive shutout in Heart of America Athletic Conference play for the Vikings.
The only other player in women’s soccer history to win an NAIA award was Inma Martinez in 2014 for her play on offense.
