The Sedalia woman facing multiple felony charges related to a pedestrian-vehicle collision on the campus of Missouri Valley University will remain behind bars following a hearing in Saline County Court.

Kelsey Chalfant, 27, was charged earlier this month with driving while intoxicated resulting in serious injury and second-degree assault, both D felonies. Prosecutors also charged her with class A misdemeanor careless and imprudent driving involving an accident. 

The charges stem from an incident on Aug. 10 when MVU soccer player Julian Marøy suffered critical injuries as he was crossing Morrow Street in the crosswalk near Conway Avenue. 

When officers arrived at the scene, they observed Chalfant sitting in a Toyota Camry about 50 feet from where Marøy was being treated. Officers made contact with Chalfant and observed that her speech was “slurred and confused.”

Chalfant was booked into the Saline County Criminal Justice Center and held without bail pending her first hearing. Court records indicate the hearing was presided over by Saline County Circuit Judge Page Bellamy. 

After hearing from the prosecution and defense, Bellamy ruled that, given Chalfant’s previous charges of driving while intoxicated and vehicular assault and her apparent ongoing substance use, no combination of bond and non-monetary conditions of release would ensure the safety of the public. 

As a result, Bellamy denied bail and ordered Chalfant to continue to be held at the jail. Her next hearing is scheduled for Sept. 23.
