As Missouri Valley College students poured back onto campus to begin the second semester for the 2019- 2020 school year and so did the heavy winter weather and it has not let up. 

On the weekend of January 10, the heavy ice, rain and snow began.  As temperatures dropped drastically students began arriving on campus before the storms. 

Not everyone made it and a few Missouri Valley College students were forced to consider traveling back to campus during the storm. Missouri Valley College student Shalina Harper said while the roads looked clear, it was safer to stay off the roads during those winter conditions.  The weather on January 11, 2020 was just the start of the winter advisory for the area.  

Many students were stuck mid travel and for many students that were already on campus were dealing with cancellations.

“I was searching everywhere for a safe ride back to campus and the school shuttle was full for the day,” Missouri Valley College student Shakrya McDuffie said. “I contacted the Student Success Office and they were very helpful.  I ended up stuck at a hotel for the night, but the next day I had safe travels thanks to the schools shuttle.”    

Teams such as both the Women’s and Men’s basketball teams dealt with game cancellations on January 11.  The Women’s program already dealt with cancellations on January 1 against Pittsburg State University.

Both teams were supposed to play against Grand View University at 2:00 and 4:00 P.M. when Andy Pulverenti, sports information director of Missouri Valley College emailed and twitter updates  the student saying “Schedule update for @mvcbball & @mvc_wbb. The home doubleheader vs. Grand View scheduled for Saturday has been postponed due to expected weather. Games will take place Monday inside the Burns Athletic Center. Women’s game at 4pm, men’s game at 6pm. #valleywillroll”. The game was then made up on that later date.  

During that following week classes began on campus, however the winter advisory was still upheld. For a few varsity reserves teams in different programs dealt with game cancellations.  As the weather calmed for the next two days the temperatures dropped but no more winter advisory. On Friday January 17, 2020 another advisory was sent across the Midwest region causing Missouri Valley College and many other schools to close for the day due to heavy icing and snow fall.  

“Due to the extremely high probability of severe winter weather Missouri Valley College is canceling all classes and closing offices for Friday, January 17, 2020.  The dining hall will remain open for normal operation. The Malcolm Center for Student Life will open at 10:00 a.m. and close at 12:00 a.m.” an email from the head of Student Affairs Heath Morgan read. “All community members please be aware that the campus sidewalks and roads in the Marshall area may become extremely slick and hazardous over the next 48 hours.  If you are planning to travel please be safe and be aware of road conditions. Students, please check your email and Moodle for class instructions. Be safe!”  

Not even a week later Marshall was put under another winter advisory and students and teachers were emailed by MVC communications informing them about future conditions and to check their MVC alerts with more updates and information about future cancellations.
